About this Blog

Who are we? What do we do?

My first experience with psychology, was trying to get credit for an elective as a PSYCH 101 student in a lecture hall of 1000 students. I thought it would be a joke – a review on Freudian theories and silly psychoanalysis with no true relevance or empirical value. My delusions were crushed when the professor stood at the front of the room and introduced herself to the class.

“Hello, I am Dr. Segert. And I am a neuroscientist.”

Suddenly, I was introduced the reality of psychological sciences – the understanding that we long ago left behind the idea of adolescents falling in love with their parents and talking through your problems as sufficient treatment for crippling psychiatric disorders – in order to pursue an entire field of scientific intellect rooted in the brain, three pounds of tissue that influences each and every aspect of our lives. I was hooked. Because suddenly psychology wasn’t just an elective, it wasn’t just an easy A or a chance to learn the basics in diagnosing my friends’ abnormal behavior.

It was the beginning of true discovery.

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the statement, “Psychology is not a science.” In a way this is true. But that’s not something to feel downtrodden by; rather, it gives this field more significance. Psychology is not just a science, because it can’t be. The human condition – and all that it entails – is more than can be explained through simple statistical procedures and molecular analysis. While the foundation of psychology is now rooted in hard science (specifically, the brain), it encompasses the mind – our behaviors, thoughts and desires. Psychology is, in it’s most basic form, the study of human behavior and therefore the study of what makes us human. This blog will work to explain this phenomena; to break down the complex elements of psychology – this beautiful combination of art and science. We will discuss topics ranging from ADHD, to PTSD, to drug addiction, to romantic love. We will analyze how our every personality is influenced by society, nature, and – most notably – the brain.

This is the human condition… it all starts with three pounds of tissue.
